Self-Reflection

Part 4: Self-Reflection – A Quiet Conversation with Myself

There’s a quiet ritual I return to every evening, like a whispered conversation with my own soul. As the day draws to a close, I reach for my journal—sometimes tired, sometimes buzzing with ideas, always with the desire to pause and listen inwards.

I write not with the intention of perfection, but with a longing to understand. What worked today? What didn’t? What stirred something inside me—joy, discomfort, curiosity, resistance? I find that when I commit these reflections to paper, even briefly, I begin to see patterns: creative rhythms, emotional undercurrents, whispers of ideas waiting to unfold.

Some evenings, I write down a poem—often short, fragmented, more feeling than form. Other times, I record a sentence from a book I’m reading or a line from a poet whose words mirror my inner state. On those days when words feel heavy, I simply sketch. Little line drawings, symbols, gestures that capture the essence of a thought or feeling. It’s not about creating something to share; it’s about being present with what is.

I’ve always loved writing. If I weren’t a visual artist, I believe I would have become a writer. But in truth, I’ve never had to choose. I carry both within me. My art and my words intertwine like old friends—they inform one another, support one another, grow together.

This small practice of self-reflection—this gentle habit—has become an anchor. It grounds me when I feel scattered. It celebrates my small victories when I forget how far I’ve come. It reminds me that the creative process isn’t just about output—it’s about awareness, noticing, tending to what lives inside.

Sometimes, when I look back at pages from months ago, I’m struck by how much I’ve changed—or how some questions still linger, waiting patiently to be explored. It’s a conversation that never ends. And I think that’s the beauty of it.

How do you reflect on your journey?
Do you write, paint, move, or simply sit with yourself in stillness?
Whatever your way, I hope you give yourself the gift of noticing. It’s in these quiet moments that we learn to trust our own voice.
